Replacement headlamps must comply with European standards regarding safety, watertightness and prevention of short circuits (ECE-R37). These standards are based on the incandescent and halogen lamps of the past. LED replacement headlamps cannot meet those standards because there is no filament in them. That is why they do not receive the E-mark R37 and they are therefore officially not allowed to be used on public roads. Motorists can be fined by the police during a check, despite the fact that the light image of the lamp does pass the MOT. They may be used on private property and in racing, for example.
